This confrance will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the Albany Crowne Plaza Hotel featuring a luncheon
keynote address by The Honorable Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the New YorkState Assembly and
Actor/Director/Activist Christopher Reeve.
Presenters will explore the ever-changing landscape of biomedical
research since the mapping of the human genome, as well as introduce possible avenues to further New YorkState's
presence in biomedicine andbiotechnology. Join government and industry leaders as they explore the important
scientific, ethical, and legal issues arising from stem cell research, gene therapy, genetic engineering and genetic
testing.

New York's Choice: Leader or Laggard in Biomedical Research and Biotechnology

This report, released by AMDeC, describes New York's increasingly precarious ability to be a major plaer in biormedical research generally, and the genomics research arena specifically, in large part because othere states are significantly outpacing New ork in their investment in genomics and biomedical research. The report traces the State's steady decline in biomedical research as measred by such key indicators as funding from the National Institutes of Health to New York institutions.

Transforming Biomedical Science and the New Era of Medicine in New York: A Proposal to Implement a Five-Year Strategic Initiative for Human Genetics Research in New York State

Leading researchers from AMDeC member institutions developed a strategic initiative in genetics and genomics research designed to establish New York as a global leader for this growing and critical area of medical science. This initiative is the centerpiece of AMDeC's efforts to foster biomedical research in New York State. AMDeC's strategic initiative, which is intended to be fully realized within five years (2005), includes a four-part strategy that addresses the full spectrum of medical science, from basic science through the development of clinical applications that incorporate knowledge about gene structure and function in treating disease. The four elements to AMDeC's strategic initiative in human genetics are: 1) development of core facilities; 2) technology development; 3) facilitating access to patient populations and support to novel gene-based therapeutics; and 4) training and grants to support scientists.
